Bedding

In the United Kingdom, bedding materials are usually straw, wood shavings or sawdust. Lesser used products are shredded bank notes and sand.

Wood shavings has been a popular product for many years, but now most of the larger growing units are using straw or rice husks as the main bedding.

Environmental Straw Products delivering 800 bales of finely chopped straw. which is sufficient to bed down 300,000 baby chicks.

Straw is very much a by product of arable farming and years ago farmers burn it in the fields or chopped it up and ploughed it back into the land..  The dense smoke given off from the burning straw drew a lot of environmental criticism and has been the cause of motorway crashes.

Hundreds of thousands of tonnes are now used by the chicken industry each year after it has passed through a chopping and cleaning process.

A laying service is often provided by the straw processing companies. Machinery like this can lay up to 160,000 sq meters a day.

Fact :-    BirdsEye uses chicken from Thailand and Brazil and Safeway uses Thai chicken in its burgers and chicken kiev.
